During the first week of August, 2008, we toured southern Poland. The organisation of the trip was complicated to say the least, and in the end some of us had to fly from Leeds at "stupid o'clock" in the morning, and the rest arrived in Zakopane at an equally stupid hour almost 24 hours later! Still, we all eventually got there, and had a great time! We were a party of some 40 singers, along with a similar number of partners and Friends. We visited Zakopane and Kraków and performed three concerts to large and enthusiastic audiences. In the absence of Darren Hogg, our accompanist, who was unable to join us, we were pleased to welcome Nigel Stark to play for us, as well as doing his own solo items in each concert.

Performing in the Church of St Katherine, Kraków (photo: Michael Savage) Our programme, called "From Dibley to Kraków", included many favourites such as Mozart's Ave Verum Corpus, Locus Iste by Bruckner and Panis Angelicus by César Frank along with some unfamiliar items like Szeroka Woda (Broad Waters) by the Polish composer Henryk Górecki, which we attempted to sing in Polish - which the audiences seemed to appreciate! The Dibley part was the setting of Psalm 23 by Howard Goodall, which is the theme tune for The Vicar of Dibley. At the rehearsal in the Church of the Holy Cross, John looked ...
